Description: The creative process behind the layering of this painting entailed maintaining a sense of flow and rawness. The overall painting is minimalistic, however it required calculated layering to keep the feeling of “flow” within the composition. Every time I walked by this piece in my studio, I would mentally think of colours and shapes to add or to not, sometimes not making any additions to the painting for weeks until it made sense. Each characteristic of the final composition depicts different aspects that we all experience in our lives through the colours and shapes used.

The deep yellow depicts moments of happiness.

The sap green and titan buff colours portray connection to nature.

The dollop of cadmium red depicts anger, rage, sadness, violence.

The pale violet, peach, and pink colours depict uncertainty.

The continuous rotating black line, created using my bare hands, portrays peace, contentment, and flow.

The circle with the free flow charcoal scribbles depicts chaos amidst control; what it feels like to suppress our authentic selves in a world that constantly expects perfection.

Lastly, the royal blue portrays inevitable death in memory of my little brother.

The black outline that flows between the different layers, aims to mimic the whole experience of life, flowing and moving together in connectedness.
