Description: We often spend our lives chasing what society deems important in order to be a successful individual. We find ourselves running in circles, disassociating from our true authentic selves; becoming fragmented and distorted into living for others approval, validation, and acceptance. Living to obtain wealth, power, and social status is the rat race that we all experience on some level. This leaves many of us feeling exhausted by our own expectations. When was the last time you stopped to ask yourself:
Am I happy? What keeps me grounded? Am I living as my authentic self? How much do I allow society to dictate my self-worth? Why do I wake up in the morning? What is my purpose?
The outlines of the human bodies represent the human experience as a social species as living every day on autopilot. Each human body is fragmented into small sections, depicting how many of us have lost a sense of our own self and have embodied various aspects of what society deems worthy. Each human body is disassociated into the one next to it, portraying how individuality and uniqueness seems to be virtually nonexistent for so many. Some who live with chronic mental health, experience disassociations of the self and identity as literal fragments of their being. The small black circle in the center of the painting aims to evoke deeper questions to the viewer - “What are you running to? What are you working towards? What keeps you grounded and centered?” The bright, free flow, and colorful outer composition portrays a geometric depiction of the universe and the importance of self expression and authenticity.
While I worked to finish painting the last few pieces of fragments of the human bodies, I noticed the first fragment color I had painted was an olive green, and the last fragment color I painted was also olive green. The unexpected placement of olive green side by side as fragments symbolizes a fusion of oneself, as a true self; an authentic being.
