Description: Creating this hybrid abstraction and realism painting required the perfect balance of cathartic free flow and calculated layering of composition onto the canvas. When I first peeled off the wrapping from the blank canvas, I had this powerful innate feeling to truly let go in every way possible; using various mediums and making spontaneous markings with tools and techniques…to simply just flow. I had no pre-plan or intentions for where the painting would go, I really tried to stay in the present moment as much as possible - with a blank state of mind…allowing my intuition to guide my paints and techniques across the canvas. I channeled multiple emotions and feelings throughout this creative process including anger, freedom, irritability, happiness, sadness, euphoria, and self trust.
As I continued to connect my inner emotions through colours, shapes, and mediums, I found myself feeling a sense of contentment and euphoria. The release had cascaded into a deeply profound sense of healing of my emotional, mental, and physical being.
I have always wanted to dabble with realism, so I decided to take the leap while creating this piece. As I began to paint an abstract figure of a woman onto the base layer, I realized I wanted to really channel the feeling of empowerment, healing, pride, and self-love through this painting. Thus, the woman is seen holding her own head up high in bravery and authenticity. She is composed of bright bold fragments of colours where some of the hues are pouring out of her being, articulating her inner healing overflowing out of her soul. I believe we all struggle with asserting our own sense of authenticity in our relationships and experiences, often feeling fragmented with others opinions and expectations bleeding into our own. The bold fragments of colours that fill up her body, mind, and soul are intended to mirror my own healing journey.
Kintsugi is a Japanese art form of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with gold. The ideology aims to portray the concept that one can embrace their flaws and imperfections, thus creating an even stronger, more beautiful, and resilient selfhood. I utilized gold leaf around some of the fragmented sections to articulate this art form.
The gushing of healing through colours, gilded with gold leaf accents, whilst on a base of several layers of pure release and intuitive self expression…this painting aims to portray the powerful capabilities of manifesting into the best versions of ourselves through transforming our scars into art.
