Description: Abstract expressionism is typically misunderstood, as it is often perceived as holding no meaning, lacking the ability to portray deeper thought of human experiences, and requiring no calculation or artistic understanding. I view my artworks as a visual representation of the passage of my evolution as a person through time, experiences, healing, and self-growth by using colours, shapes, lines, and mediums. In an essence, my artwork is a visual diary of my human experience.
Reflecting back on when I started this painting a year ago, I notice how different of a person I was then, and all the ways that I have been evolving into the best version of my self today. There were many times over the year, when I thought this artwork was finally finished but it just never felt done and I didn’t know why. Simultaneously, I was experiencing ups and downs with myself and as I would continue my self-work, I would slowly continue to add more layers onto the canvas. I realized I needed to trust my intuitive feelings and just continue to work on the composition until that innate feeling of “it just feels right” sparks within. Concurrently I have been continuing to explore my spirituality, philosophical ideologies, psychological understanding of myself, and solidifying the ability to trust my intuitive self in my everyday experiences. The brushstrokes, oil pastel scribbles, calculated geometric shapes, free flow lines, shapes, and colours all represent an inner dialogue with myself over the year. This painting helped me realize that just as I use intuition to guide all of my creative processes, I also need to learn to trust this feeling outside of the studio.
A classic example of how art imitates life and how life imitates art.
